Brief Overview:

 

The botany department was started in July 1966 with 45 students in B.Sc. I and Dr. A.C. Varshney as the head of the department. Shri J. L. Varshney, Shri A. B. Raizada and Dr. S. C. Sharma served the department for some time. Shri R. P. Saraswat was appointed on an ad-hoc basis for the session 1973-74 but this 5th lecturer’s post could not be sanctioned by the authorities. Dr. A. C. Varshney, Shri K.P. Varshney (1967), Dr. R. P. Yadav (1972) and Dr. A. K. Gupta (1972-73) served the department till their retirements. Dr. (Mrs.) Madhulika Gupta (2001), Dr. Seema Anand (2010) and Dr. Ashwini Sharma (2017) were appointed by UPHESC. Dr. Prathiksha Raghuvanshi (2006) and Dr. K. P Yadav joined the department as Lecturers. After the retirement of Dr. A. K. Gupta in 2012 Dr. Madhulika Gupta is serving as the Head of the Department. All the faculty members of the department are M.Sc., Ph.D. and fully competent in teaching and actively participate in other college activities.

Student and teacher strength – At present, the department has a sanctioned strength of 4 teachers to teach about 300 undergraduate students.

Curriculum Planning and Implementation – The department has a rich collection of museum specimens of plants, fossils, economic and other botanical specimens, scientific instruments such as microscopes, pH meter, seed germinator, centrifuge, soil testing and water testing kits, Incubators, Seed Germinators and other Botanical equipments and models etc. The department is well prepared for starting M.Sc. classes and research work. We also have a rich departmental library with more than 300 books.

Additional Study Material– In class notes, additional reading material and appropriate references to online and physical resources enhance the learning experience.

Assessment –Regular tests ensure practice for question paper pattern and develop better answer writing skills.

Learning Outcome – The department has a consistent pass percentage of around 85%.

Best Practices –Departmental members use different practices to enhance the knowledge of students like ppt presentation, seminars, quiz, poster presentation, bouquet competition, tree plantation, field visits of botanical garden and tissue culture lab. Teachers do career counselling in starting of academic session and take tests of theory and practical to prepare the students well for the examinations. We call the well placed alumni of the department to encourage the young batches. The students are also guided by guest lectures from time to time.

Feedback from Stakeholders – To identify latest needs of students the feedback is collected from both students and parents.

Research and Publications – The teachers of the department are actively engaged in developing digital content for teaching, participating in seminars and training courses and writing research papers and reviews.
