BRIEF OVERVIEW:

The department of Chemistry was established in 1962 with undergraduate courses. Dr. Mukut Bihari, the founder head of the department played an important role in setting up the department in its early phase. In 1966 the department was upgraded to post graduate level. The department was fortunate to have many excellent faculty members. Dr. Mukut Bihari, Dr. Y.C. Rastogi, Dr. Harish Chandra, Dr. Chandra Has and Dr. S. P. S. Jadon have served as the principal of the college. After 1966, the department initiated efforts to foster research activities. As many as 56 Ph. D. have been awarded to research scholars of the department and over 350 research papers have been published. Three major projects and many minor projects sanctioned to senior teachers, have been completed. In 2010, the department had organised a UGC sponsored National Conference. At present, Dr. Neerja Sharma is the head of department. She is ably assisted by very proficient colleagues, Dr. Roli Agarwal, Dr. Ranvir Singh, Dr. K. K. Singh, Dr. Devendra Singh, Dr. Maheep Kumar, Dr. Mohan Kumar, Dr. Teena, Dr. Saurabh Chaudhary, Mr. Pravendra Kumar, Mr. Gaurav Kumar, Mr. Shiv Upadhyay and non-teaching staff.

Student and teacher strength – At present the department has a sanctioned strength of 13 teachers to teach about 600 undergraduate and 48 postgraduate students.

Curriculum Planning and Implementation – Teacher take graduate and postgraduate classes as per academic calendar and curriculum plan prepared, at starting of the session. All teachers review it periodically and if necessary, extra classes are taken so cover the syllabus in scheduled period. 

Learning Resources – Department has various models, charts etc. to explain theoretical concepts to students. All labs are well equipped with all type of apparatus. There is an instrumentation center and research lab in the department. College library has many valuable reference and text books. Besides this, the departmental library has about 100 books contributed by teachers for the consultation of students.

Assessment – Regular class tests, quiz, rehearsal of practical exam are conducted to develop skills to solving question paper and enhance the ability to face the examination.

Learning Outcome – The average pass percentage is about 75 – 80%.

Best Practices – Besides the lecture method, teacher used various ICT tools, guidance and problem solving through WhatsApp groups, poster and seminar presentations, group discussions are used to enhance learning and presentation skills of students. Many cultural events, career counselling sessions, invited talks are also organized in the department. Dr. Chandrahas (Retd. Principal and head) provide motivational prize to the student security highest marks in chemistry to encourage them, every year.

Feedback from Stakeholders – Student feedback is collected, analysed and communicated to teachers to understand their concerns. 

Research and Publications – Faculty members are actively engaged in writing research papers, review articles, attending national and international seminar proceedings. At present 6 research scholars are enrolled in the department.
