The English Department came into being in 1947. Professor Murari Lal with the assistance of Shri Jagdish Saran Mishra established the department with the initiation of Commerce Faculty to impart teaching of English language to commerce graduates. B.A. & M. A. Classes were introduced in 1951 and 1957 respectively. Professor N.P. Gupta became the Head of the Department. A number of literary luminaries like Shri R. K. Jalali, (later joined Hans Ranj College, Delhi), Shri G. S. Gupta, Shri R. K. Sharma, Shri R. P. Gupta, Shri B. P. Sharma, Shri B.B.L. Agrawal (shifted as Principal of a college), Shri A. K. Mukherji, Shri B. K. Chaturvedi (later joined Air Force), Shri T. Venktesan, Shri H. H. Prasad, Sri P. K. Dixit, Shri S. K. Sharma, Shri M. R. Varshney, Sri D. K. Gupta Sri J. P. Sharma, Shri K. S. Srivastava, Shri Mahesh Puri and Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma graced the Department. After the death of Dr. Manoj Kumar 2014, Dr. Neeta took the charge of the department.
Student and teacher strength –At present the department has 7 teachers against the sanctioned strength of 7 teachers to teach about 700 undergraduate and 75 postgraduate students.
Curriculum planning and implementation – The department offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. The classes are organised as per the academic calendar and curriculum plan prepared at the beginning of the session.
Learning resources – The college library has collection of several rare books. Besides this, the departmental library has about 100 books contributed by the teachers, alumni and students. These are available for consultation to teachers, postgraduate students and meritorious undergraduate students.
Additional study material – Movies based on novels and drama prescribed in the syllabus and lectures of eminent professors on YouTube are shown to students. In-class notes, additional reading material and appropriate references to online and physical resources are provided to the students.
Assessment – Regular assessment of students ensures timely feedback for their improvement.
Learning Outcome – The department has a consistent record with an average pass percentage of around 85 %.
Best practices – Besides the lecture method, other teaching methods are frequently used e.g., ICT learning resources, group discussions, poster presentation, classroom seminar, etc. Smartphones and personal computers are utilised to enrich the teaching learning experience. As part of its innovative practices, an annual newsletter is published by the students to nurture creativity and develop leadership skills in them.
Feedback from stakeholders – Anonymous student feedback is collected, summarised and communicated to teachers.
Research and Publications- Teachers of the department are actively engaged in research activities and have several research papers, seminar proceedings, book and book chapters to their credit. More than 15 research scholars have got their Ph.D. Degree till date. At present three research scholars are enrolled in the department.
