The department of mathematics was initiated in 1962 with B.Sc. Classes. Mr. Prempal Arya was the founder head of the department. M.Sc. Classes began in 1964. Dr. Navalkishor Varshney (1964) Dr. Chakkhanlal (1964), Mr. Bhagwat Swarup Singhal (1965), Dr. Rajendra Kumar Gupta (1968), and Dr. Prem Chand Gupta (1969) joined the department as lecturers. Besides teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the teachers of the department have been active in research and several Ph.D. degrees have been awarded from the University. After years of invaluable service to the department and the college, all the founding faculty members have now retired. At present Dr. Achlesh Kumari is the head of the department and is supported by Dr. Manju Bala, Dr. Omveer Singh and Dr. Rekha Rani. A national conference entitled “Recent Advances in Mathematics and their Applications” was sponsored by University Grant Commission, New Delhi. Some members of the department were invited to deliver a guest lecture and as a resource person by the several universities in India and abroad.
Student and teacher strength – The department has a sanctioned strength of six teachers. There are four permanent teachers. The strength of undergraduate students is 550 and there are 240 postgraduate students (M.Sc. and M.A.).
Curriculum Planning and Implementation – The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The classes are organized as per the academic calendar and curriculum plan prepared at the beginning of the session.
Learning Resources – College library has a collection of several books which is beneficial of our students.
Additional Study Material – Lecture notes are provided to the students.
Assessment – Monthly tests ensure the quality of students and their writing skills.
Learning Outcome – The department has a consistent pass percentage of around 87%.
Best Practices – Besides the lecture method ICT tools, open discussions, quiz competitions poster presentations and guest lecture etc. are very useful.
Feedback from Stakeholders – Student feedback is collected at the end of session.
Research and Publications – Teachers are actively engaged in research and have published several research papers in reputed national and international journals. Text books are also published by teachers. Three students were awarded Ph.D degree in 2017-18 and one research scholar is currently enrolled in the department.
